Librarians select books and other media for the library collection.
- I notice a lot of kids and teens like to read comics and graphic novels, so I order as many comics and graphic novels as I can!
- What kind of books do you want to see at the library? *Write down ideas on paper or take a picture of ideas written on the bulletin board*
- In a public library you will find many fun books, magazines and even DVDs and video games, toys and technology.
Librarians help people find information.
- Why do people need information?
- To make decisions. For example, choosing the best science fair project. Other examples, finding the best high school for you AND deciding where you want to work when you grow up.
- Because they're curious and want to learn. Some people want to learn about the sun and the stars in the sky, some people want to learn how to fix a bicycle, some people want a cookbook to learn how to cook. There are so many topics people like to learn about for fun!
- What are some ways people get information?
- Books, magazines, newspapers, websites and social media, movies and TV, music and radio.
- Librarians teach media literacy. In the 21st century, literacy means not only reading and understanding what you read, but also questioning why the information was written or recorded.
- Is the information complete?
- Is the information accurate?
- Is someone trying to sell you something?
- A lot of information is created to sell products that people will buy or ideas that people will believe
- Part of a librarian's job is to help people find good information that is true.
